We are Registered Holistic Nutritionists who have had health challenges in the past. That's one of the reasons we LOVE working with families and kids. Why not help others avoid what we went through?
Brenda Wollenberg was exhausted and had mood and digestive challenges. Fortunately, she worked with a wellness practitioner who helped transform her life. She then took her five children on a vegetarian journey. Teachable moment? Some kids do really well with only plant-based foods. Others? Not so much!
When Alicia Mazari-Andersen was younger she didn't have the best moods (just ask her three children!). She started her wellness journey when her kids were teens. Once Alicia changed her diet and lifestyle habits, transformation began in her and the whole family!
What do you get when you partner a still-teaching PhD Botanist (Alicia), raised in Mexico City (with the mad Mexican cuisine cooking skills to show for it), and passionate about digestion and gut health with a former social worker (Brenda), who loves exploring emotional connections to food and who has been advocating a none-one-size-diet-fits-all approach long before "vegan" or "keto" became household words?
A whole lot of simple to understand and put into practise yet multi-layered steps to a healthier life!

I used to yell at my kids. A lot. After what I had experienced as a child, yelling at MY kids was something I had vowed never to do. When, however, you are juggling too many things--work, home, kids, and life--and eating well and exercising are two of the balls you've dropped, then constipation, not enough sleep, crankiness, being unkind and, yes, yelling, are what you get.
What changed? I became a holistic nutritionist. I discovered underlying digestive and hormonal issues that needed work. When those issues resolved, my moods changed, no more yelling, no more constipation and better sleep patterns. I got healthier and happier and my family did too.
Initially trained as a social worker, Brenda was employed in the social services field for almost a decade. During this period, she worked with family support services in a variety of positions including group home supervisor and social worker for an inter-ministerial residential facility for high-risk adolescents.
Though she loved her work, it was also during this period that she decided if she was going to work 9-5 with an abundance of ‘work in progress’ children, that she was going to come home to a quiet house and only one warm body—that of her husband, Mark. Five kids later you can imagine how that worked out :) It's a good thing she got healthier and happier before the family came along!

After 20 years as leaders in wellness, we think family nutrition should include both parents and children. Ways we help you make that happen? Simple! Our programs are geared to involve your kids; we support parents to educate through the power of play and gamification; and we invite you to join a community that embraces the same goals, concerns and challenges.
They say "it takes a village to raise a child." Don't feel alone in this process; let us support you on the optimal wellness journey.
You know when you get that letter from a teacher or the principal of your child's school and you are afraid to open it because you are worried that your child has acted up again, and maybe it's worse this time? And that, unfortunately, you will have to miss work again and are dreading the consequences?
Or maybe you have noticed that your child has been more moody than usual. It's a big concern and the emotional ripples are affecting you as well.
Something is happening with your child that neither you nor they are enjoying. And you realize: if I change nothing, nothing will change!
As nutritionists, we have found a common contributing factor to bad moods, inappropriate behaviour, and even depression in kids. In simple terms, it's digestion. What we eat and how we digest our food can be a factor in other problems, issues such as sleep disturbances, challenging attitudes and inbalanced moods.
Digestion aside, however, often the root cause of many of the issues is the fact that parents are confused, overwhelmed and tired of trying to sort through today's nutritional jungle. They're frustrated with trying to get their children to--whatever the illusive answer might be--eat "right."
If your child is struggling with digestive issues, which most likely manifest as poor attitude, disruptive behaviours, hyperactivity and bad moods, the responses can be a challenge for the entire family.
Clearing the confusion and looking for alternatives that can be easily implemented at home can be empowering for every family member.
Could you imagine getting encouraging letters from your child's teacher about your son or daughter's enhanced ability to concentrate and their positive behaviour in the classroom?
Can you imagine your child starting to make links between food, mood, sleep and behaviour? Could you imagine something happening with your child as recently happened with the child of one of our HHKA clients:
Alicia's phone rang, and the name of the client came up on the screen. When Alicia picked up, she was surprized that the caller wasn't the mother, but rather the woman's 8-year old. The youngster started the call by asking: "Would you really help me with my tummy?"
Alicia said "YES," the rest is history, and the world now has another happy, healthy child!
Nutrition can be complicated. We make it simple. And doable. So you can be your best you.
